Going Green?

Why go green?  We are all busy working hard to do the best for our families everyday so we may not stop to think about the big picture very often and how our day to day choices impact the environment. The bottom line is that everything we do eventually makes an impact – positive or negative – on the environment. It’s true that your family’s actions alone won’t make a dent however, the aggregate of our collective actions definitely can and will. Think about a simple example – you bring your groceries home in a plastic bag, you unpack it at home and toss the plastic bag into the garbage where it will end up in a landfill.  Now think about the thousands of other families just like yours that do the same thing – but what if they all shopped with a reusable bag instead?  That kind of action, done with our own families, adds up!

The average family send 80 pounds of garbage a week to a landfill.
In the US, average daily water use is 159 gallons, while more than half the world’s population lives on 25 gallons.
Americans constitute 5% of the world’s population but consume 24% of the world’s energy.

How to Go Green

There are so many ways to go green but which ones will work for your family?  Which habits will stick? Think about going green like going on a restrictive diet versus making small changes to your normal eating routine.  You are much more likely to stick with healthy eating habits if you are able to make small changes that don’t disrupt your entire life or make you feel like you have to deprive yourself of the things you like to do (or eat!).

Recycle!

Make sure your entire family is sorting everything they can for recycling!

For some “going green”  brings up images of eccentrics living off the grid or of making major lifestyle changes that require giving up significant conveniences. For others it means incurring big expenses to upgrade or replace windows, appliances, etc. I believe your family can live greener and make an impact without drastically changing your lifestyle.  I believe it’s the small tweaks that you make to your normal, everyday life that will cause real changes to your habits and the choices you make on a daily basis. Being more aware of our impact and the big picture will in turn cause a shift in your perspective as you live life.
